Name of Presenter: Tejas Devaraj and Shachi Dave

Affiliation: High School Students in DC and NY area.

Abstract

Introduction

High Schools are places where you can raise awareness as well as money for Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation. There are many students who are willing to help make a difference in the world, especially for the sake of education. A school and its students are a crucial element to influence towards the goal of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation because they both are in the same mindset.

Project Details

We spread awareness to people in our schools and community through presentations about Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation. We tried to show people why it wasn’t only important for India, but also important for the world. Shachi presented a PowerPoint about Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation in her school’s community service class. Tejas created a website fundraiser where people could donate to Ekal, as well as a group on Facebook to spread the message. Although not a way to raise money, the importance of a Facebook group is to spread the word about Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation and its goals. Birthday parties are also a great way to raise awareness and money for Ekal. Shachi asked her friends and family to donate to Ekal for her Sweet 16 party.

Result

$590 was raised towards Ekal through the Fundraiser website put up by Tejas. Shachi raised $2315 from her Sweet 16 party. The students at Shachi’s school also raised money to sponsor one school.

Conclusion

A High School, or even a Middle School for that matter, is a great place to raise awareness about the illiteracy rates in rural and tribal areas in India. Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation should also spread awareness by going to community service groups and presenting information about Ekal.
