Ekal Walk 2011
Ekal DC conducted its third annual 5K Family Nature Walk on Sunday, April 10, 2011. The event received the enthusiastic participation of 125 walkers, who gathered at the scenic Rock Creek park in the nation’s capital. In the words of Dr. Shanker Gupta, who helped organize the walk, ”The idea for walking for Ekal arose from the daandi marches of Gandhi, who walked to create energy and bring about change in India. We walk to bring the light of education and literacy to tens of thousands of children across every region in India. What could keep Gandhiji’s memory alive better than to continue the movement he fathered across the continents and a half century later?”
Walkers gathered at 9am, shared nutritious snacks, walked along scenic pathways and creeks, then ended the morning with a raffle and some merry-making. Picture highlights of the walk can be found at http://picasaweb.google.com/117898422044395883277/EkalWalk2011?authkey=Gv1sRgCOnt_JvcnK-QdA.
The DC nature walk was sponsored in part by the organizers, the Indian American Medical Association of DC (IAMA), the Virginia Association of Indian American Physicians (VAAPI), the Southern Maryland chapter of AAPI, HSBC Bank Potomac and Cesar production. Whole Foods and others donated water and nutritious snack items.
Ekal has been organizing walks across the country in California, Boston, Seattle and the DC region. Ekal also participates in marathons across the country, in keeping with the idea that a healthy mind must reside in a healthy body – and nothing promotes health better than walking.
The FOURTH Annual Ekal 5K Nature Walk will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Rock Creek park. We encourage everyone to come with friends and family to enjoy the day and the park. Let Ekal take care of the organization and details, so that you can get to know this wonderful park and incidentally also help bring the light of education to a tribal child or two.
